Events Date: 2013 PROJECT

INTRODUCTION

In some areas of Katsina state, having access to clean drinking water is a daily struggle. This is caused by the distant source of clean water. Women and children were the major target of this project due to the statistical report from the community hospital and health centre which shows very high rate of ailments such as gastro enteritis, cholera caused by bad hygiene practices.

In most cases, the women bore the burden of fetching water across great distance. The source of water supply now closer to the home will reduce such burden. They are taught on water management, hygiene practices as well as sanitation in order to subdue any re-infection.

SUM-UP OF PROJECT ACTIVITIES

2. Construction of Hand pumps
3. Training of identified youths on maintenance and repairs of hand pumps
4. Commissioning of project by community leaders
5. Monitoring and Evaluation
6. Project Closure/ Handover to Community

CONCLUSION

We have two volunteer members in every community where the new hand pumps are cited. This includes a community head and one handy man (local bicycle repair or mechanic) that monitored the construction of hand pumps.

The volunteer members in each community were trained on maintenance process of the hand pumps. We have also succeeded in setting-up a committee on water among the community members.

The committee will monitor the people and see that good hygiene is well practised. In addition, some youths that partook in the construction of the hand pumps were trained on maintenance and repair to safe guard the hand pumps from vandals.

Additionally, we achieved an increased percentage in education such that more children especially females will attend schools as they now have the source of water close-by.
